It was emphasized that individual variation is so large, and rate of decline sufficiently gradual, that a grave mistake would be made if any one person was discouraged from continuing his endeavors because of age. Not only would it be a grave mistake, but it could be a great loss for society. For example, Pressey and Pressey (1967) reported a study of ten remarkable men from Michelangelo to Churchill whose careers continued into their 80s. In addition, two groups of professional people past 70 were studied and some of them continued their careers well into old age. Pressey and Pressey concluded that all these long-working, successful, older adults had characteristics in common. They all had: (1) significant purpose, (2) "mellowed wisdom," and (3) role and status to nurture continuing their work.
Thus, Lehman's data are important only in their implications with respect to group trends—implications that are important in social planning. Lehman (1953) made an analogy between his data and life expectancy tables of life insurance companies. Most of us expect to outlive the average life expectancy, and we arrange our lives for this possibility. But many of us also recognize the meaningfulness of the group averages and prepare for these contingencies too.
Even accepting some artifacts of method and social restrictions which unfairly suggest that older people are not as creative as younger ones, the group averages seem to point to diminution with age in creative productivity. Just as there are personal consequences to this, there are broader social ones too.
