Generic Norvasc (Amlodipine, Norvasc® equivalent)

Amlodipine is in a class of medications called calcium channel blockers. Amlodipine widens the blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump and reducing its workload. Amlodipine is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and to treat angina (chest pain). Amlodipine may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

AGE AND BEHAVIOR: LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE -MOTIVATION - AROUSAL AND RESPONSE LIMITATIONS

Eisdorfer (1968) considered two sets of conclusions: One, referring to an earlier study in which older people performed better in a serial learning task when the exposure duration was long, i.e., 10 seconds, as compared to a shorter 4 seconds, he suggested that fast pacing, i.e., the 4-second exposure, made for anxiety or otherwise inhibited response. Two, referring to the FFA study described earlier, the heightened autonomic arousal of the elderly subjects similarly may have served to inhibit response. The omission error was seen as an index of this inhibited response.
Thus, both the overall laboratory situation (situational anxiety, especially when needles are inserted as in FFA determinations) and the specific inhibiting character of the fast pacing of the stimuli (perhaps also anxiety producing) work together to decrease the performance levels of older people. This was tested as a hypothesis in the following way: A group of elderly subjects was tested for serial learning both with a 4-second stimulus exposure duration and a 10-second exposure. The total error scores were 84.3 and 31.9, respectively. Then, on the next day, the experiment was repeated, but this time the subjects were "autonomically aroused" by the needle-FFA procedure. The respective error scores were then 82.0 and 63.2; performance deteriorated with the longer exposure duration—the one in which performance without the "situational anxiety" had been good. The implication is that the response inhibition due to the stress of the noxious FFA procedure was maximum when response inhibition due to stimulus pacing was minimum. This pattern was reversed in a subsequent condition when the subjects became "adapted" to the FFA procedure.
Whether or not response inhibition (due to anxiety) is a reasonable interpretation, it would be of value to repeat these studies, comparing older and younger adults. Are the response inhibition tendencies of the old so much greater than those of the young that they can account for poorer cognitive performance?
