AGE AND BEHAVIOR: LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE - STIMULUS PACING - INTERACTION BETWEEN INSPECTION AND ANTICIPATION INTERVALS
The notion that older people perform poorly in quickly paced experimental tasks because of "response time" limitations rather than "studying time" limitations was explored with serial learning tasks as well as with the paired-associate tasks. (The serial learning tasks involves separate stimuli, often words, presented one after another. After the list of stimuli has been presented one or more times, the person learning the list is required to respond by anticipating and supplying the next stimulus in the sequence, the one not yet presented by the experimenter.) The conclusions based upon serial learning were compatible with those based upon paired-associate learning (Eisdorfer, Axelrod, and Wilkie, 1963; Eisdorfer, 1965).
Eisdorfer varied the exposure durations of the stimulus words (i.e., the time available for inspecting the stimulus), and he also varied the interval between the stimulus words (i.e., the time available for anticipating the next stimulus and responding before it appears). It was clear that the older subjects benefited from both the longer periods allowed for inspection and for anticipation.
