AGE AND BEHAVIOR: LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE -MOTIVATION - AUTONOMIC RESPONSIVITY - NEW INVESTIGATIONS OPEN NEW DIRECTIONS

New investigations open new directions in the study of learning in later life—they can help in our understanding of the dynamic interplay between cognitive and motivational factors. Two obvious lines of research remain untapped. One line involves the Eisdorfer et al. (1970) study. This must be carried out with a young adult control group in order to know whether the extent, and perhaps the type, of the drug effect is unique to older people. It is possible, for example, that both young and old will improve their learning performances with the drug, but not to the same extent. In such a case, we would have the means of improving performances, but we would not be able to attribute the age deficit in learning performances to factors apart from central nervous system functioning.
The other line of needed inquiry is less straightforward. This involves the relationship, if any, between the very important undifferentiated arousal functions of the autonomic nervous system, and the more volitional, goal-directed desire to achieve high scores on laboratory tests. A series of studies manipulating volitional states of motivation, perhaps by variations in instructions, or by variations in rewards and punishments, in conjunction with age studies of psychophysiological arousal, may be expected to provide a comprehensive picture of the relationship of learning and performance factors in relation to age.
